2010.03.11 Week 3 Blog 5 - Phonics

Phonics refers to a method for teaching speakers of English to read and write that language. Phonics involves teaching how to connect the sounds of spoken English with letters or groups of letters (e.g., that the sound /k/ can be represented by c, k, ck or ch spellings) and teaching them to blend the sounds of letters together to produce approximate pronunciations of unknown words.

Phonics is a widely used method of teaching to read and decode words, although it is not without controversy. Children begin learning to read using phonics usually around the age of 5 or 6. Teaching English reading using phonics requires students to learn the connections between letter patterns and the sounds they represent. Phonics instruction requires the teacher to provide students with a core body of information about phonics rules, or patterns.

I love this video which I find in Youtube. This video has clear tone with lively rhythm and melody. It uses big letters and colorful pictures to attract our attention. Moreover, pictures repeat again for making people memory 26 letters of alphabet more quick and impressive. In my opinion, this video is a good way to learn 26 letters of alphabet for people who learn English at the beginning.

It is important for children to learn English by using phonic materials. Children will like to join the interactive curriculum to learn English, and they can know how to pronounce new vocabularies. Moreover, they hope children are intersted in learning English. Therefore, most teachers are perfer to use phonics as their teaching tools in elementary school.
